A vision in red.
Tracy Turner, a participant from the September
'99 Rome Tour, sent me this shot taken from our group rubbing venue at the church of San
Silvestro in Capite. The inscription is a cast copy of a Damasian* stone, which is serving
as reference for my 'Philocalus' typeface (currently in development).

* Pope Damasus (366-384) was responsible for
commissioning a new style of inscriptional lettering, originally intended solely for use
on memorial epigraphs for martyred Christians. For this purpose, his scribe Philocalus
(one of the earliest known lettering craftsmen) designed a script of distinction,
dignity and grace.
